Meet Jen Stanley

Jen built a career in human resources after university, working across lots of businesses and industries. She enjoyed it, but something was always missing.

After having her two boys she got into functional fitness herself, and it opened the world up to her. She added nutrition coaching, and then the personal training qualification with Create. She chose them because the training was local and in person, which is how she likes to learn, with flexible online study she could fit around work and family. She qualified in 2019.

Today she runs an HR consultancy focused on workplace wellness alongside her coaching, sees private PT and nutrition clients, and coaches at a functional fitness gym. She went on to complete a diploma in women’s health, and now specialises in women’s wellness.

What she’s most proud of is the community she’s built: regular ladies’ days that bring 30 women together to train, share food and learn what it means to look after themselves.

I’d written myself off as a mum in my thirties. Functional fitness opened the world up to me, and now I get to bring 30 women together to train and learn what it really means to look after themselves.

The questions people always ask

What made you take the leap?

“I’d built a career in HR but something was missing. Getting into functional fitness myself opened the world up, so I added nutrition coaching and then the PT qualification.”

Was studying alongside work realistic?

“Yes, the flexibility was the key. I was still working and had my two boys, so once one was in bed I’d get the laptop out and work at my own pace. The in-person side suited me too, because I like to learn face-to-face.”

What surprised you most about the job?

“How many doors it opened. I run an HR consultancy and a wellness business side by side, and the qualification feeds into both. Working with women has been where I’ve seen the biggest light-bulb moments.”

What would you tell someone thinking about it?

“Understand your own learning style first, and look at the balance of online and face-to-face. Choosing a local provider plugged me into the gyms and coaches around me, which made a real difference.”
